The image below represents a lot diagram, which appears on the back of a “Grant Deed” dated 1897. The other side of the document includes a written description and this diagram is a visual representation of that description. This diagram is similar to the diagram we viewed before purchasing the property. My interest in this diagram is in the names associated with the properties surrounding 36 SL.
According to this diagram, in 1897 the green bungalow to the left of 36 SL was owned by Hilliam James. To the right side, the property that is now 23 Love Lane, was owned by Stephen Reutens and the property to the rear of the lot was owned by Clara Israel.
I was unable to find any history online about these individuals or their families. Anyone with information on James, Reutens or Israel, please contact us. We are interested in their background and roles during that particular moment in Penang’s history.

Dear Azza and Chris
I am currently looking to purchase a heritage house and I would like to enquire about your estimated costs for the restoration
Greatly appreciated your kind advice
Thanks in advance
Gim
Hi Gim,
Trying to estimate the costs of the project is one of the most difficult aspects. It largely depends on the size of the house, the condition, what you plan to do with it etc… Since we are just beginning the project and have yet to engage any contractors, I’d rather not provide what our current estimate is. However, I will start working on blog post to outline all the elements someone should consider when trying to estimate the cost of a project. thanks for the inspiration!
If you have a specific property in mind, feel free to email me directly and maybe I can give you some suggestions.
Chris
Dear Chris
Thanks for your response. Would it be possible to share the names and contact details of the 2 architects which performed the dilapidation study? How much did it cost for each study? If confidentiality is an issue, please write to my email address
Regards
Gim
Hi Azza & Chris,
We have manage to buy the 23, Love Lane and in progress of construction of a new Heritage Boutique Hotel.
Have you found any info on Stephen Reutens (previous owner) of the 23, Love Lane?
I amlooking for some old photographs and if possible the history of the building for my marketing purpose.
Let me know if you have any info.

Hi Dylan,
Thanks for posting a comment, we have been looking for information on Stephen Reutens as well but so far have been unsuccessful. We will post more information here if we find it.
btw.. Your project looks like it is going well and we love your blog. All of the details you have posted about the process of restoration have been priceless and I am sure many people are finding them valuable. We cannot wait to read more and to see the outcome! Thanks for sharing!
